Matilda Needs Volunteers!

The Gibson Memorial Library in Creston seeks individuals interested in learning tax return preparation and/or experienced tax return preparers to participate in the VITA program which will be located at library the 2020 tax filing season.

The Internal Revenue Service sponsors the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program each year. VITA offers free tax help for people with low-to-moderate incomes, senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and those who speak limited English.

There are many reasons to become an IRS-certified VITA volunteer. Tax professionals (enrolled agents, CPA’s, non-credentialed tax return preparers) can earn continuing education credits when volunteering as a VITA Instructor, quality reviewer, or tax return preparer.

No prior experience is needed as volunteers receive specialized training. VITA volunteers are from all backgrounds and ages, as well as individuals who are fluent in other languages.

Volunteers receive training materials at no charge. Tax law training covers how to prepare basic federal tax returns electronically. Some tax law topics covered are deductions and credits.

Hours are flexible, and volunteers generally serve an average of three to five hours per week during the tax filing season

If you are interested in this opportunity, please contact David Hargrove at david@creston.lib.ia.us or call (641) 782-6507 to get started. We hope you’ll seek the opportunity to increase your skills and help the community!
